About: Carmen Cusido

Carmen Cusido, 24, is a lifelong Union City resident and the daughter of Cuban exiles. Cusido graduated from Union Hill High School in 2001 and from Rutgers University (Rutgers College) in 2005 with honors. She has a degree in journalism and political science. She is a part-time reporter at The Times of Trenton, and is receiving her Master of Science at Columbia School of Journalism. She has worked for DiversityInc, a monthly magazine (which also produces daily web updates) that makes the business case for diversity. In addition, she has freelanced for The Star-Ledger and interned at Rutgers magazine and at The Jersey Journal. Cusido also worked as a reporter for the Gannett-owned Home News Tribune, and contributed to the Spanish weekly paper, Nuestra Communidad and the quarterly magazine DesiNJ, which are owned by Gannett. She also has worked for the Hispanic Directors Association as an advocacy and press coordinator. In her spare time, Cusido has volunteered with the American Diabetes Association through their “Por tu Familia” initiative, targeting Latinos at risk for diabetes, and those who already have the disease. She’s helped out with expos, awareness campaigns. She also serves as a mentor through the Sisters of Promise organization. She is a scholar with the Christine Todd Whitman Excellence in Public Service Series, and recently was elected secretary of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Northern New Jersey chapter. In addition, she is a Class of 2004 alumna of the NEW Leadership, a five-day long intensive summer program through the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, that teaches college women how to seek elected office.
