About: Ida L. Castro
Ida L. Castro, Esq., serves as Vice President for Sponsorship, Development and Government Relations at V-me, the first Spanish digital broadcast network launched by Thirteen/WNET, public broadcasting’s flagship station. This new multiplatform national network offers programming and news analysis to the Spanish speaking community seeking for alternative programming in Spanish. Dr. Castro recently served as Chair of the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) Taskforce on Healthcare Diversity, created to assist GNYHA hospital and nursing home members with their efforts to enhance diversity on their governance structures including Boards of Trustees, senior management positions, as well as to enhance access to health care for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, or national origin. She served as the Haywood Burns Chair for Civil Rights at the CUNY School of Law 2004-5, where she developed and taught seminars on employment and civil rights law. Dr. Castro is President of IC Alliance Development Group, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in diversity workplace management practices, alternate dispute resolution and crisis management. Dr. Castro was previously Chair/CEO and General Counsel of the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission under President Clinton, where she led the national civil rights enforcement agency with a budget of $300 million and over 3,000 employees. During her tenure she established a groundbreaking national mediation program that resolved more than 13,000 charges in its first 18 months. Dr. Castro has also served in several positions in the U.S. Department of Labor, including Deputy Solicitor and Director of the Women’s Bureau. Other positions she has held include Commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Personnel, Senior Legal Counsel for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, Associate Professor Labor Education, Rutgers University, and Director of Labor Relations and Counsel to the President Hostos Community College-City University of New York. Dr. Castro completed her undergraduate work at the University of Puerto Rico and then received both her master’s degree and law degree from Rutgers University. She holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from St. Joseph’s College. She serves on the Executive Council of the NJ AARP; Women’s Venture Fund Board of Directors and the John Heldrich Workforce Development Center, Rutgers University. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Rutgers School of Law Public Service Award-2001, US Vice Presidential Award for Good Government Practices, Rutgers Alumni Hall of Fame 2000, the National Puerto Rican Coalition’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hispanic Bar Association’s Outstanding Leadership Award, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund’s Outstanding Leadership Award, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund Legal Services Award, among others.
